Lake Greenwood Forum

MicroGuy | October 9, 2009

In the quest to become so spread out that my work becomes the epitome of mediocrity, I have made another website.  There is now a nice little community forum available for people to gather and discuss anything related to Lake Greenwood, South Carolina.  Total time invested so far, about one hour.

Check out Lake Greenwood Forums Here!

Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize?

MicroGuy |

obama_peace_prize

I’m just as big of a fan of President Obama as the next guy, but come on, winning the Nobel Peace Prize after eight months in office? This guy must be snorting magic pixie dust in the Oval Office. The next thing you know he’ll be nominated for an Emmy for “Best News Broadcast”. Now If only he could manage to dismantle the Federal Reserve System. If he figures a way to pull off that magic trick, I’ll build an Obama shrine in my garage.

Remove Ask Tool Bar Revisited

MicroGuy |

A short while back I wrote a quick how-to on removing the dreaded Ask Toolbar.

Little did I know that Ask has designed two services to continue running on your machine even after you uninstall their toolbar.  If you think you have completely removed the nasty Ask spyware from your machine, you better check one other place, Windows Services!

Step 1.  Go to > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

Step 2. Stop and disable the “ASKservice” and “ASKupgrade” services.

Step 3. Manual removal would require registry edits.

I haven’t done the complete manual removal yet, but will update this post with the steps once I do.

Media Temple PHP Version Quirk

MicroGuy | October 7, 2009

Media Temple is a fantastic web host but I have found one little quirk that drives me bananas from time to time. If you specify PHP version 5 in your control panel and then make any sort of change to your .htaccess file, the version will default back to PHP 4. I’ve got a couple of scripts that will only run under PHP 5 and when this happens, it takes the entire website down. It’s an easy fix, just head over to the control panel and switch it back to PHP 5.  However, it’s still an annoyance. I don’t have time to research this quirk at the moment, but it would be interesting to know what causes this to happen.  If you know, please leave a comment below!

Update! After exhaustive testing, I’ve now concluded that MediaTemple is the best grid hosting service available. Click here to get it for yourself!

iWeb Review

MicroGuy | October 6, 2009

Well, it’s time for another server. I don’t really need it but overkill is fun. There are some great specials through the month of October over at iWeb.com. I’m thinking about getting a little something to use as a live roll-over mirror. Will probably go with a basic 2 disk configuration plus the bonus unmetered 10mbs upgrade for FREE. :) Update at eleven.

Update! After months of testing, I am now convinced that MediaTemple is the best cloud hosting solution on Earth. Click here to try it for yourself!

Apache Memory Leak WorkAround

MicroGuy | October 3, 2009

After downloading Apache for windows 2.2.13 I developed a memory leak in the HTTPD.EXE binary. Each day the memory being used my Apache (as reported with task manager) would just grow and grow until the web server finally crashed. On average the server would run for 2 or 3 days before blowing the fuse. As a work around I wrote the following one-line batch file and saved it in my Apache /bin directory.

httpd.exe -k restart

Then I installed windows system scheduler to run the batch file every 4 hours. I know this isn’t exactly a fix, but it works great. If anyone has a better idea, please leave it in the comments section below.

Peace out.

Stephanie Burkitt Betrays Letterman!

MicroGuy |

David Letterman and Stephanie Birkitt

Well, it looks like the leak has finally been identified in the David Letterman extortion case. Stephanie Burkitt, a former Letterman assistant and lover, was also the recent live-in girlfriend of suspect Robert “Joe” Halderman. These two apparently worked together on the plan to blackmail Letterman. However, it looks like David and his attorney really turned the tables on these two goof-ups. Halderman faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted. And Ms. Birkitt is not out of the woods by a longshot.

Update: the correct spelling of Stephanie’s last name is “Birkitt”.

Dabo Swinney Fired at Clemson

MicroGuy |

swinney

I can just see the headlines now, “Dabo Swinney Axed at Clemson”.

The fans up in Tiger Town don’t take too kindly to losing, especially two in a row where the Clemson football team is the favorite. We’ll see if he makes it through the off week. If he does, Clemson better blow out Wake Forest or I bet he’ll be getting a one-way ticket out of town.

That’s just how they do it up in Clemson. Win, you stay, lose, you leave.

Glowing teeth. Houston we have a problem!

MicroGuy |

Just whitened my teeth using a combination of luster whitening and CVS 5-minute whiten. My teeth are now 10 shades lighter. Only side effect, my teeth now glow in the dark.
