Godaddy Grid Hosting Nightmare

MicroGuy | January 22, 2009

Update! After months of testing, I am now convinced that MediaTemple is the best cloud hosting solution on Earth. Click here to try it for yourself!

Tonight, I finally decided to give Godaddy’s hosting another chance (I know, I’m a bonehead)  and test their new Grid hosting plan. That was not a very good idea. The initial configuration went smooth, but when I attempted to add another domain, a message appeared stating that economy accounts can point to root only.  This is not an economy account! Well I called the support line and after 30 minutes on hold was told that I would need to write a special script to get around this issue. The support guy (refused to give name when asked) suggested I look into Apache mod-rewrite!

The Godaddy website clearly states that Grid hosting supports unlimited domains and nowhere does it mention that they all must point to the same directory. There were several other issues regarding security ( I can browse the entire server using SSH FTP) and self-spawning directory aliases, but I’m in no mood to write an essay on everything that went wrong. It would take too long.

My advice, wait until this service gets into ‘Alpha’ before wasting your money. Strike that. My advice, run for the hills as fast as you can, far away from any of Godaddy’s hosting offerings before you fall victim to the bugfest.

Their Grid hosting product should be scrapped. I found it

MicroGuy | January 23, 2009

Their Grid hosting product should be scrapped. I found it completely unstable, unusable, and not even close for public beta. I can’t speak for the back-end, but the front-end is frighteningly horrible.

Henry | January 24, 2009

Thank you!

My Godaddy hosting account is up for renewal, and I was tempted to give them another chance. Your post reminded me of how painful and aggravating they are to deal with.

They FINALLY have ssh support on their shared plans, but when I went to enable it, I got a the message

” Status: Blocked – Your account is not SSH enabled.
Please Note:

* Your databases must be deleted before enabling SSH. ”

I figure if I’m going to all the effort of moving my databases, it will be to another host.

I was planning to get a shared hosting package off

Moataz M. Khalifa | February 18, 2009

I was planning to get a shared hosting package off godaddy, their prices are really cheap compared to other companies. I’ve never tried any of godaddy’s services before, only tried register.com (which is really good) but their prices are way too expensive. Ordering a hosting package to serve a couple of domains (plus actually registering the domains) would cost much more than I can afford.

Seeing that godaddy has alot of issues, specially the part where u can move around their server. really frightened me.

Anyway, can u recommend a cheap and reliable hosting company? that is not going to shut off in a couple of months and has no security issues? I’d appreciate this :)

Drop me an email at klazzik@gmx.com. Have a nice one ;)

I’m not sure about your particular needs, but I’m getting ready to try this Grid service for $20/month. http://www.mediatemple.net. Their control panel would be easier to use than a slicehost shell.

I was almost singup GoDaddy’s Grid service. Glad to find your post. I also found the statement in their FAQs about the domain support

Grid Hosting supports aliased domains, but not multiple hosted domains.

You can find out more about their Grid Host FAQ here

Well. I was also thinking about MediaTemple’s Grid Service too. Not sure if you already switch over. I have heard so many complaint about their performance and downtime on their GS. So I am not sure if MediaTemple is a right choice yet.

If you already switch over to MT’s GS? How do you like it?

I am hosting many sites with GoDaddy. I rarely used their shared hosting but intensively used their dedicated and virtual dedicated servers. As a result i feel comfortable with GoDaddy, i like their servers and service quality.

Mart | May 26, 2009

For the record, it seems you can operate your website out of a subfolder now.

I was completely frustrated with the shared hosting at Godaddy, as it was obvious the server I was on was completely overloaded. Page loads over a minute sometimes during the day. I’m trialing Grid at the moment and my initial feeling is that it is miles better. Page loads down to 17s from the other side of the world – during the US peak time. Not too hard to administer either. Much the same. Got my site running out of a subfolder without any problems.

I am too having my own nightmare with Godaddy Grid

John M. | July 7, 2009

I am too having my own nightmare with Godaddy Grid hosting. It started when my ‘unlimited’ shared hosting account began getting decent traffic and apparently started overloading their server. They moved my site without asking me to some crap server with other ‘bad’ sites which was super slow and completely down half the time. They suggested I switch to grid hosting and it being cheaper than the shared I agreed. When I went to move my domains to the grid hosting account, they ran into a dns issue and as a result all my domains have been down for over 24 hours. I’m losing money and they don’t have an answer. There is nobody you can escalate issues like this to. Stay away from these guys, you really do get what you pay for.

david | July 22, 2009

You need to review the facts. Everything you said may have been true about the grid the first month it was released but none of this holds true anymore. You can add multiple domains, uptime is great (pingdom is 100% for 4 months), they need to release more info about how their grid works and better train their support but it still is in beta. All in all Godaddy grid hosting is a great product.

Good that you shared the experience. I hope they corrected now and will offer a better service in the future. So many of my friends wanted to signup for this. Will send them this link before deciding.

GoDaddy Grid hosting still a nightmare. I have one small site

shawn_dude | August 17, 2009

GoDaddy Grid hosting still a nightmare.

I have one small site on the “unlimited” el-cheapo plan. It’s slow but okay for what I need it for. The price is right. However, I moved a more important site to GoDaddy’s grid hosting plan and I’m getting worse service. Not only that but there’s a serious DNS issue–I cannot reach my domain from inside my house (on any machine) without excessive, repeated attempts. The el-cheapo domain is reachable. Everything else on the intertubes is reachable. GoDaddy suggested I not use the domain name and instead use the ip address in the URL. (seriously–that was the best they could do.)

Now I’ve got to move the site again to another (yet to be chosen) host.

Avoid GoDaddy. It just isn’t worth the hassle.

Thanks for sharing Shawn. There is a nice list of

Thanks for sharing Shawn. There is a nice list of cloud hosts a couple of comments up that you might want to check out. I’m using MediaTemple and have been extremely pleased. Have a great day!

Been using Godaddy for years without problems and they answer

Philip | August 31, 2009

Been using Godaddy for years without problems and they answer you when you call. Also dealt with network solutions and that was a nightmare. Probably host 30 to 40 sites on Godaddy and a few still on network solutions but as the come due for renewal they will be moved to Godaddy, they promise unlimited* if you read the * its based on how much room is on the harddrive on that server. Unlimited is never unlimited but it still dirt cheep and well if you want the something better run your own server otherwise if you want cheep and easy quit bitching and use godaddy.

ChristianImpactNews | September 17, 2009

I want to like GoDaddy, they are inexpensive (which is the best I can do at the moment, prayerfully we will be able to run our own server one day), but I have a serious issue with them right now. My site has been down for over 24 hours due to a 503 error. This error was supposed to be fixed yesterday but still nothing today. After talking with them for the third time, I upgraded my account to “deluxe”, still have same 503 error… they say it may take up to 24 hours…. I pay to be up- I expect what I pay for- I feel cheated right now… prayerfully this is not so. Peace and may the Hand of God be upon you all.

The Godaddy environment onlys works good after 10pm at nights.

supersuper | June 15, 2010

The Godaddy environment onlys works good after 10pm at nights. Its really bad with their shared hosting in the day. Everyday your sites either don’t open or takes 30 seconds to open. its really really bad especially for dynamic sites using Joomla. They host from 2,800-3,700 web sites on the same shared server/computer with yours. Do a reverse ip check. Google reverse ip and when you get to a reverse ip web site, insert your web site ip into their box and check. They don’t care about your business. They will cause you downtime and don’t care. I need a cheap resellers account with shared or grid hosting that works consistently. Avoid Godaddy if you have heavy sites and need shared hosting. I want to switch but don’t know who to go with.

Anon | September 14, 2010

Godaddy Deluxe hosting SUCKS! Been with them for several years, was ok at first but now seeing 150-200 Server Load Averages (not joking)!!! On a simple site with (1) SQL!!! Half the time I get 500 internal server errors. Don’t waste your money. Try to push your upgrades on me FU Godaddy.

Hardik | June 13, 2011

I have been using godaddy for years, recently they moved my hosting to a server that was giving me a lot of troubles, when I asked them to solve the trouble they asked me to move to the grid hosting, I did so thinking it will solve my trouble and now I am stuck, the average site load time is around 1min, with their shared hosting it was like 3sec. Is this 4th Generation or back to 1st Generation?
