A Pile of Premium .TVs

Things are not looking good for Dot TV these days. I could fill this entire blog with numerous reasons as to why the extension is failing. But for all intents and purposes, the premium drop ratio is the best method for tracking it’s health.
Dot TV is the only TLD that has premium domains set aside by Verisign. The best domain names are available for lease at a premium. There are currently over 50,000 of these domains available for registration. When a domain is registered it comes off the pile, and when someone decides not to renew, it’s tossed back on.
If the pile gets bigger it’s bad news. If the pile gets smaller it’s good news. On the year, there have been an additional 356 premium domains added back to the pile.

While I agree that it is a good idea to monitor the amount of regged premiums, I don’t think that it reflects objectively the health of the extension.
IMHO, It reflects solely the health of the premium pricing, which of course, becomes less and less popular (eNom powered)

Because of the unique nature of this extension, most of the good domains are premiums. If the Premium inventory is rapidly increasing, this means that businesses and individuals who at one time had decided to invest in the extension are now leaving. This is very bad.
They are probably following the lead of other former players Current.tv and ChannelMe.tv who have also decided to depart. The only chance that Dot TV has for survival is for Verisign to obtain a lengthy contract extension with Tuvalu. But it’s probably too late in the game now for that to work. IMO.
