The New Compound

MicroGuy | September 26, 2008

We are moving into a new house situated on 7 acres of wooded land. It will be necessary to move this server to the new location on October 1st. There will be a disruption of service to this site for no longer than 4 hours on that date. The new MicroGuy network should have a total of 10Mbs down x 1.5Mbs up by mid October.

Saturday TV Drops?

MicroGuy | September 20, 2008

There are well over 200 dot tv domains dropping tonight. However, it’s what I call a dry list. There is nothing there appealing to me. If I had to pick my two favorites, it would have to be PECAN.TV and SURFACED.TV. Both worth at least $100.00. If I get a chance, I may take another look at the list later today.

WordPress 404 Errors

MicroGuy | September 19, 2008

I just added a neat little PHP file to my theme directory. It’s a brilliant little piece of code that redirects users coming into my blog from a bad link. Instead of seeing a nasty 404 error, we now redirect the users to the blog’s home page. You can try it now for yourself. Go over to www.microguy.net/gobblegook. If you like the idea of giving your visitors a chance to read something other than a 404 message, you can get the script here.

TRU.TV – Dropping Tonight

MicroGuy | September 15, 2008

It’s very interesting to see this domain dropping.

This is one of those rare occasions where a premium .TV may be worth the ransom. I believe that if the new registrant were creative, he could avoid any TM problems. It’s also possible that Court TV may pull out that big checkbook and make the new owner an offer he can’t refuse.

Update: The powers that be just jacked the price up on this domain from $500 per year, to $15,000 per year. The photo to the left accurately expresses my feelings toward “the powers”.

Dot TV Drop Lists

MicroGuy | September 14, 2008

I received an email yesterday from a company preparing to add .TV to their current drop list offerings. Interest in this area is on the rise, and now there will be three sources for .TV pending deletes. On average, there are only three or four good domains dropping each week and the competition for these domains is on the rise. Tonight I’ve found one gem worth chasing and will have at least 4 or 5 others trying to catch the same domain. I’ll try to avoid an interception.

Domain Ramblings

MicroGuy | September 13, 2008

It’s fun to look back from time to time and see how my sold domains are getting along.

I recently parted ways with GREENCAFE.TV.  That domain is now being used as a redirect to NextGen Vending. A company that “delivers organic snack and beverage products to schools, hospitals, airports, fitness centers, corporate facilities and other retail markets via custom vending kiosks.” I wonder that they have planned for the name?

Then there’s LAKEGREENWOOD.COM. I sold this domain about a year ago to a Real Estate Group in Greenwood, South Carolina. Now I see it plastered on billboards, signs, it’s even painted in big block letters on the side of a building. I’m glad to see the new owner getting the most from the name.

Today, I’m excited to test the traffic on my lastest domain, KNOCK.TV. According to Estibot and Alexa, it gets a little traffic. I would guess it’s typos coming from people trying to reach the now defunct KNOCKA.TV site. I might even develop it….then again, that’s what I always say.

WordPress Hyper Cache

MicroGuy | September 12, 2008

If you are looking for a way to Digg Proof your WordPress blog, you could do a lot worse than Hyper Cache. I’ve tried Super Cache and for the time being, I will be recommending Hyper Cache. Super Cache has a few known issues and unless you have a couple of days to contribute to the development of a promising (but not stable) WordPress plugin, better to steer clear. With Hyper Cache, I uploaded and activated the plugin in about 5 minutes and presto, it really worked.

MicroSoft Commercials

MicroGuy |

I really like the new MicroSoft commercials starring Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld. Bill Gates has always been a favorite of mine even with his penchant for bloated code. Oh the good old days when a single 5 1/4″ floppy disk contained an entire operation system. And then he came up with that crazy GUI idea. :o (

Has anyone else noticed the flood of Vista updates that have been coinciding with the new commericals? I’ve been forced to reboot every day for the past week.
